1864 "Eagles" Issue
Mexico District No Overprint 3c. Brown on laid paper, unoverprinted and uncanceled, ample margins all around and very attractive impression, two faint creases not visible on front. The 3c. stamp, produced in 1865-66, served as an experiment for local city mail, with only 2,403 units issued; the unoverprinted stamps are likely remainders from that period and are quite rare. The stamps from consignment 157-1865, with a total of 100 issued, are the only known examples printed on laid paper; as a result, this stamp is among just two recorded to date, with Pietsch documenting only a single instance. MEPSI certificate. Scott 18b (var), $4,500 as an overprinted stamp.
