Lot: 45
(x) Mexico
1856 Issue
Mexico District 4r. Red and 1r. Yellow, cut into in places, both used on registered cover front from Mexico City to Atlixco, used to send lottery tickets to be sold in that small destination town, dated September 6, 1856, consequently paying the first rate. The rhomboid with dots is the earliest cancellation used in the country. A very scarce registered mail. Scott 2, 4
Note: According to postal regulations, the front of registered mail was to be cut and signed by the recipient as confirmation of receipt. It was then returned to the originating office and destroyed after two years. This fact contributes to the rarity of these surviving fronts.
