Lot: 40

(x) Mexico
1856 Issue
Mexico District 1r. Yellow on cover front (rebacked), tied by superb bold strike of "diligencias generales/linea de toluca" oval handstamp illustrated with stagecoach, and accompanying "gratis" oval at top, both applied at stagecoach company offices for letters submitted there, rather than at post offices. The stamp used out of its district. Just a handful of covers or cover fronts are known with stagecoach cancellations; this example likely holds the greatest visual appeal and is among the most attractive cancellations of Mexico's classic period. A spectacular exhibition item. This item was featured on the cover of the Mazepa auction sale of Mexico (Regency Auctions, 2000). MEPSI certificate. Scott 2.
