Rhodesia and Nyasaland
1957-59 Provisional Postage Due
1959 (23 Jul.) envelope from Causeway to Salisbury bearing 2½d. tied by 'causeway' machine cancellation, taxed 1d. and with Provisional Postage Due 1d. affixed and tied to envelope by 'salisbury delivery room' c.d.s., fine and rare. B.P.A. Certificate (1969). Photo

Note: In 1959 following the increase in the postal rate to 3d., there were a large number of letters sent with insufficient postage paid. The Salisbury Post Office ran out of Southern Rhodesian postage due stamps and resorted to using ordinary postage stamps to denote the surtax. This created a certain amount of confusion, so these stamps were handstamped 'Postage Due'. No other post office adopted this practice, so the 'Salisbury Delivery Room' datestamp is the only authentic cancellation'
