Rhodesia and Nyasaland
1957-59 Provisional Postage Due
1957 (19 Nov.) envelope from Palombe to Salisbury bearing 2d. tied by 'palombe/ nyasaland' c.d.s., taxed 1d. and with provisional 1d. Postage Due affixed, which was subsequently tied by 'salisbury delivery room' double-ring datestamp; fine and very rare, the only known cover of this period. B.P.A. Certificate (1971). Photo

Note: In 1956 following the increase in the postal rate from 2d. to 2½d., there were a number of letters sent with insufficient postage paid. The Salisbury Post Office ran out of Southern Rhodesian postage due stamps and resorted to using ordinary postage stamps to denote the surtax. This created a certain amount of confusion, so these stamps were handstamped 'Postage Due'. No other post office adopted this practice, so the 'Salisbury Delivery Room' datestamp is the only authentic cancellation'
