The Sitwell Correspondence

It is believed Macloutsi was opened in June 1891 to deal with mail from the Pioneer Column who had enterered Mashonaland in July 1890. The sender of the following letters, Captain William Henry Sitwell, served with the Bechuanaland Border Police and was stationed at Macloutsi 1891-93
1891 (17 Apr.) and 1892 (12 Apr.) envelopes to Beal, the former bearing 1888 4d. clearly tied by "555" barred numeral, showing fine "vryburg/bechuanaland" c.d.s. alongside, the latter bearing 1888 4d. and 1891 2d. sharing "macloutsi" c.d.s. with another strike adjacent and showing, on reverse, Vryburg (18.4) and Cape Town (20.4) transit datestamps; both with some peripheral creases due to contents
