Siege of Mafeking: 13 October 1899 to 17 May 1900
The Northern Route via Bulawayo
1900 (30 Mar.) envelope ("wirsing brothers/mafeking" imprint on flap) to London, bearing seriffed overprint Cape 1d. on ½d. strip of three, 3d. on 1d. and British Bechuanaland 6d. on 3d., all clearly tied by Mafeking c.d.s. The envelope was sent by a courier who was intercepted and his mail was confiscated until recovered by the British in May. The letter was returned to Wirsing who re-addressed it locally and added a seriffed overprint British Bechuanaland 1s. on 4d., overpaying the 1d. local postage, cancelled by Mafeking c.d.s. on 16 May, the day before the town was relieved; light stain at right and small part of reverse missing. A rare and most attractive franking, one of only five intercepted letters known. Photo
