The Unique Mixed Franking in the 1856 Type-Set Issue

1856 (16 June) envelope from London to Mahaicony, bearing GB 1d. red pair and 1855 4d. carmine on blued paper, both cancelled "18" in oval of bars, upon arrival 4c. black on magenta applied to pay the internal rate, cut octagonally with small margins, initialled "E.D.W.", tied by Demerara double-arc d.s. for 11 July and showing, on reverse, despatch c.d.s. and Demerara double-arc d.s. for 9 July. Fewer than fifteen covers bearing the 1856 provisional 4 cents on magenta are recorded, of which nine are cut octagonally. The greatest attribute of this outstanding and marvellous exhibition item is its unique combination, within the entire issue, with a foreign franking.
