Lot: 56

British Guiana
1850-51 "Cottonreels"
One of the Four Unused "Cotton Reel" Examples

12c. black on blue Type ?, initialled "E.D.W.", unused, cut round with just traces of outer frameline, some minor thins and small fault above "r" of "british", not detracting from this gem. One of only three recorded unused examples of the 12 cents, made even more significant by the fact that only four unused 'Cotton Reel' stamps are known to exist, with the fourth being the unique unused 8 cents. These are considered among the greatest rarities of the British Empire in unused condition. S.G. 5II. Photo

Note: One of the other two unused 12 cents examples, without initials, was part of the Ferrary, du Pont, and 'Imperium' collections. The second example, with initials, was last referenced in 1935, when it was sold as part of the Hind collection.
