Charles I (1625-1649), Group D, Type 3a, Shilling, 18 June 1635 - 14 February 1636, Tower (under King), (m.m.) CAROLVS • D .' G .' MA .' BR .' FR .' ET • HI .' REX, no stops by m.m., fourth crowned and armoured bust left, wearing falling lace collar, large XII behind, rev. (m.m.) • CHRISTO • AVSPICE • REGNO • oval garnished shield, scroll-top harp, 5.846g, 10h, m.m. crown (Hawkins 516; Brooker 503/502; Sharp E2/2; North 2225; S.2791), some minor surface marks and metal stressing, otherwise residually lustrous and richly cabinet toned, a pleasing very fine; another, 14 February 1636 - 8 May 1638, legend as before, new smaller crowned and armoured 'Aberystwyth' bust, medium XII behind, 5.834g, 1h, m.m. tun (Hawkins 516; Sharp E5/2; North 2225; S.2792), some peripheral striking softness and to Irish shield, otherwise residually lustrous and pleasantly cabinet toned, approaching very fine, a scarce bust variety for class (2)
