Henry II (1154-1189), 'Shortcross' Penny, 1180-1182, Class 1b1, London, Pieres, hENRICVS • R | EX, serifed Ns, crowned bust facing, holding sceptre, curls 2/5, rev. + PIERES • ON • LVND, seriffed Ns, voided short cross pommée, cross pommées in angles, 1.476g [22.778grns], 2h (SCBI Mass 291-294, 296; North 963; S.1344), a hint of striking softness to portrait, otherwise a beautifully balanced example, a most pleasingly good very fine, the reverse especially so, rare in this state
