Stephen of Blois (1135-1154), 'Watford' Type, Penny, c. 1136-1145, Winchester, Ælfweald, [+ STIFNE R]EX : crowned bust right, lys-tipped sceptre before, rev. + ALPOLD : ON [: PIN]CE : octofoil with inverted fleurs in angles, 1.406g [21.698grns], 2h (Hawkins 269; SCBI 48 [Northern Museums], 1286 same dies [Prestwich]; Winchester Mint 2308, dies Aa [3 Listed]; North 873; BMC I; S.1278), a broad striking on an irregular but full-weight planchet with usual peripheral striking softness, otherwise of excellent metal, cabinet toned, almost very fine, surprisingly rare with only thirteen specimens known to Harvey (2012)
