William 'the Conqueror' (1066-1087), 'Bonnet' Penny, 1068-1070, Exeter, Æthelwine, PILLEMVS REX, crowned and diademed bust facing, with two fillets at side of head, legend around begins at 7 o'clock, rev. + [Æ]GELPI ON EXECES, the S retrograde, cross voided with annulet in centre, pellet between two crescents at each end of limb, pile in each angle within pelleted inner circle, 0.984g [15.185grns], 9h (Hawkins 234; Rev. G F Crowther, Numismatic Chronicle [Third Series, Volume XI, 1891], Type III; Brettell -, cf. 245; EMC 2012.0232 same reverse die; North 842; BMC II, -; S.1251), softly struck in parts, with lightly flashed surfaces underlying darker cabinet tone, discoloured thus but of excellent metal, almost very fine, an excessively rare type for this mint; only one parallel in EMC/SCBI but wanting from the British Museum trays
