A144, dated 7 May 1840, with fine and crisp red Maltese Cross cancellation with light framed "t.p./torrington pl." below, on reverse clear red London datestamp and contemporaneously endorsed "7 May 18 1840 This is ye Post Office Frank, the first received by me, it came from Tho Stamford Raffles (son of D & R) announcing ye death of his cousin Ella, Daughter of Sir T.S.R. at St. Leonard's Hastings". A small part of the flap missing from the reverse has been tastefully improved. A remarkable inscription on the second day of Official usage
