Henry III (1216-1272), Great Recoinage, 'Voided Long Cross', Penny, 1250-1251, Class IVb, London, Ricardus Bonaventure, hENRICVS REX III', commencing at 12 o'clock, larger crowned bust facing, fleur-ends to band, further flanked by pellets, a trio of pellets for central fleur, holding trefoil-tipped sceptre, rev. RICARD ON LVND, pellet-barred N in LVND, voided long cross, trefoil of pellets in angles, 1.27g, 1h (North 990; S.1366), struck on an elliptical planchet, otherwise with a distinctive 'hoard' tone, about extremely fine and much as struck, a truly exceptional example of this seldom-encountered type
