John 'Lacklands' (1199-1216), 'Short Cross' Penny, Class 4c, c. 1204, London, Willelm, + hENRICVS R | EX, cruder crowned bust facing, holding trefoil-tipped sceptre, rev. + WI[LL]ELM • ON • LV, short cross voided with quatrefoil in each angle, 1.36g, 1h (SCBI [Mass], 1180; North 968/3; S.1349), some peripheral striking softness, otherwise a delightful example for type with a strong, uniform portrait, a pleasing and bolder very fine, rare in this condition
