Indian Volunteer Forces Officers' Decoration, G.V.R. (Capt. H. H. Spalding E. B. Ry. Vol. Rfls.), very fine
Herbert Henry Spalding was born on 6 January 1874 and was baptised on 11 February 1874 at Palamcottah, Madras. He was educated at Uppingham School and left in December 1891. He joined the Indian State Railways on 20 September 1897 as Assistant Locomotive Superintendent with the North-Western Railway. In addition he became a 2nd Lieutenant with the North-Western Railway Volunteer Rifles from 1 July 1898, was promoted Lieutenant on 10 November 1900, and Captain on 15 June 1907. Still working with the Railways, he became District Traffic Superintendent in April 1907 and Deputy Locomotive and Carriage Superintendent in January 1914. He transferred to the Eastern Bengal State Railway Volunteer Rifles on 1 April 1915 and received his Volunteer Force Officers' Decoration on 10 March 1917. Spalding became Locomotive and Carriage Superintendent in May 1922 before he retired from the Railways in January 1929. Spalding retired to Upton-on-Severn, Worcestershire with his wife and daughter, he died on 15 May 1943.
