(x) Five: Pilot Officer A. E. Usher, Royal Air Force who, having won a 'mention' on the North-West Frontier and completed a tour of Operations, was killed as a Navigator on a training flight from Jurby, Isle of Man in January 1943

Albert Edward Usher was commissioned as a Pilot Officer in July 1942 and was killed in flying accident on 16 January 1943, when serving as a navigator and instructor at No. 5 Air Observers School at Jurby on the Isle of Man. His aircraft - a Blenheim - crashed into a hillside near Caulkerbush, Kirkcudbrightshire, with a loss of six lives, including Flight Officer Pamela Lawrence, W.A.A.F.

All instructors were screened personnel who had completed a tour of operations in a bomber squadron. Usher, who was the son of Archibald and Jessie Usher, and the husband of Elizabeth Usher of Hitchin, Hertfordshire, was buried at Troqueer Cemetery, Kirkcudbrightshire in Dumfries and Galloway.
