Frederick Prefreement was born in London and worked as a silversmith prior to enlisting with the 16th Lancers on 25 July 1830 at their Depot. Embarking for India on 29 June 1832 he joined the Regiment there, appearing at Cawnpore in July 1833, transferring to Meerut in December 1837. The Regiment took part in the attack on Ghuznee in July 1839, later serving at Meerut, Fermueah and Chinsurah until December. He was later present for the Gwalior Campaign, taking part in the bloody Battle of Maharajpoor on 29 December 1843.

He was present for the First Anglo-Sikh war and volunteered to serve with the 3rd Light Dragoons (No.596) on 2 March 1846 at Rhurenalla. Prefreement was still with this unit during the Second Anglo-Sikh War, notably the Battle of Chilianwala where the Regiment suffered heavy losses.

Prefreement saw service at Umballa until October 1848, later transferring to Camp Khota before going to Meean Meer in early 1849. He briefly returned to Umballa before going to Wuzeerabad in early 1850. Returning to England on the Herefordshire in the spring of 1851 he rejoined the 16th Lancers on 21 July 1853 and then served with them in Dublin.

The Regiment returned to India from Dublin in the summer of 1854 arriving in Cahir in July, Prefreement was discharged to out pension in April 1855 and was awarded his L.S. & G.C. on 20 April that same year and proceeded back to Dublin on 16 June. He was admitted to Out-Pension on 10 July 1855 with his residence being North London; sold with typed service details and a photograph of a cavalryman in uniform, this quite possibly being Prefreement.
