William Workman was born circa October 1816 at Glasgow, Scotland. He entered Asia as an Ordinary Seaman on 5 August 1838 and was discharged on 10 April 1840 as having taken part in the bombardment of Acre and Syrian campaign. He entered Cornwallis on 5 June 1841 as an Ordinary Seaman and took part in the capture of Chapoo, Woosung and Chin Keang Foo on the Yangtse Kiang River. He was promoted to Able Seaman on 1 July 1842 and was still serving aboard Cornwallis when the Treaty of Nanking between the British and Chinese governments was signed and sealed on 29 August 1842, he completed his service on the Cornwallis on 24 November 1844. Workman received £4 & 2 Shillings on 14 April 1845 from the Nankin Batta. Salary allotments were sent to his mother who was living at Gough Cottage, Paradise Row, Chelsea, London.
