Naval General Service 1915-62, 1 clasp, Iraq 1919-1920 (J.26214 G.W. Smart. A.B. R.N.), contact marks, edge bruising, otherwise very fine

Approximately 122 'Iraq 1919-1920' clasps issued, 36 of those issued to H.M.S. Espiegle lent to River Craft Tug 1.

George William Smart was born at Bethnal Green, London on 19 February 1896. A Tug Boy, he enlisted in the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 13 August 1913. Having completed his initial training at Vivid, Smart joined Irresistible until March 1915 when he was posted to Cornwallis and served aboard her until 26 May 1917 before being shore posted for the remainder. He is entitled to a 1914-15 Star Trio which were sent to him on Espiegle. Smart went on to qualify for his rare Naval General Service Medal while detached from the Espiegle in the Iraq operations of 1920. Smart was discharged ashore as an Acting Petty Officer on 10 January 1928; sold together with copied research.
