The Crimea Medal awarded to Private E. C. Hinton, 20th (East Devonshire) Regiment of Foot, who was killed in action at Inkermann

Crimea 1854-56, 4 clasps, Alma, Balaklava, Inkermann, Sebastopol (Pte Ed Chas Hinton. 20th Ft.), contemporarily engraved naming, minor contact marks, very fine

Edward Charles Hinton was serving with the 20th Regiment of Foot with the service number 3711 at the time of the Battle of Inkerman. This formation was one of the last British units to arrive on the field with General Cathcart leading them in support of the Guards one what became known as 'Cathcart Hill'. In the confusion they were counter-attacked in the rear by Russian troops and took heavy losses including General Cathcart who was shot from his horse and killed.

The Regiment piled into the fight alongside the Foot Guards and Lady Butlers painting of these two units marching back from the battlefield side by side is one of the iconic images of the engagement. Hinton was killed during the confused fighting, the intensity of the battle the 20th fought can measured by their losses which were some of the highest amongst the British troops on the field; sold together with copied medal rolls and casualty roll transcription.
