The Crimea Medal awarded to Private T. McGovern, 20th (East Devonshire) Regiment of Foot, who was killed in action at Inkermann
Crimea 1854-56, 4 clasps, Alma, Balaklava, Inkermann, Sebastopol (T. McGovern. 20th Regt.) officially re-impressed naming, slightly rubbed naming, good very fine
Terence McGovern was serving in the 20th (East Devonshire) Regiment when he was killed in action at Inkerman on 5 November 1854. One of the last Regiments to arrive at the position the 20th, led by General Cathcart entered the line in support of the Guards. The thick fog and powder smoke made co-ordination difficult and the Regiment found themselves attacked in the rear. Their losses were some of the highest amongst the allies and included General Cathcart who was shot from his horse upon what became known as 'Cathcart Hill'. The Regiment saw 9 officers and 162 men killed during the bloody 'Soldier's Battle', their return from the action is immortalised in Lady Butler's famous painting, The Return from Inkerman.
On the medal roll he is shown as entitled to the Alma and Inkerman clasps only.
