Ghuznee Cabul 1842 (Asst. Surgn. W. Collum. 3rd Lt Cavy), contemporarily engraved naming in serifed capitals, silver clip and straight bar suspension, good very fine
William Collum was born in 1811 and became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1840 ahead of being promoted Assistant Surgeon on 9 March 1841. Posted to the 3rd Bombay Light Cavalry he was serving in Afghanistan by 1842, as he was present at the advance on Kandahar, the action at Haikalzai, and the reoccupation of Ghunzee and Kabul.
The Naval & Military Gazette and Weekly Chronicle of the United Service made note on 5 August 1842 that in Bombay, Collum was appointed to Medical Charge of ex-Ameers of Scinde at Sassor. He took part in the Scinde Campaign, and was present for the Battle of Hyderabad (Scinde Medal).
Promoted Surgeon Major on 9 March 1861, he was later made Assaymaster in Bombay and is recorded living in Bombay by the London Gazette as of 27 February 1863, however in February 1864 and 1865 his residence is listed as Enniskillen, Ireland. The London Gazette further reports the birth of a daughter to the wife of 'Surgeon-Major W. Collum, Assaymaster Bombay', in Enniskillen in August 1864. He retired on 8 April 1872 and was furloughed to Europe the following July, Collum died on 16 June 1873.
