The Seringapatam Medal awarded to Captain C. W. Bell, 6th Light Cavalry, late Madras Engineers
Honourable East India Company Medal for Seringapatam 1799, 45mm, silver (Ensign Chas. W. Bell. Engrs.), engraved naming, very fine
Charles William Bell was born in Lothbury, Middlesex in 1782 and was made Ensign in the Madras Engineers in August 1898. His name is recorded on the original list of Royal Engineer Officers (No. 92) and he served as an Engineer during the famous Siege and Storming of Seringapatam. Transferred to the Cavalry and promoted Cornet in June 1801, he was advanced Lieutenant in August 1801 and Captain in 1810. During his time with the 6th Cavalry, Bell served in the actions at Asseerghur, Argaum and Gawilghur. Bell retired in April 1815 and was living at 55 Marshgate Road, Richmond by 1841. He lived to claim his superb 3-clasp Army of India Medal (last sold at Morton & Eden in November 2013) and died in June 1868.
