A superb 'No Man's Land aircraft rescue' D.C.M., 1918 M.M. group of four awarded to Serjeant J. Dugdale 10th Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, who served with great gallantry until being tragically killed in action in 1918

D.C.M. London Gazette 17 September 1917:

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in rushing forwards under heavy rifle fire to assist his officer in rescuing the pilot of an aeroplane which had fallen in "No Man's Land" some distance in front of our advanced posts. He and a stretcher bearer succeeded in carrying the wounded pilot to safety, after the other bearer had been killed. His coolness and courage set a splendid example to all that witnessed the action.'

James Dugdale was born at Elswick, Lancashire in 1885, son of William and Ellen Dugdale of Marton, Blackpool. He enlisted at Blackpool with 8th (Irish) Battalion, King's Liverpool Regiment for Home Service (No. 3097) on 20 November 1914. He left this unit in June 1915 and later joined the 10th Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Entering the war in France as a Serjeant he performed his acts of gallantry in 1917 and 1918 before joining the 9th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment late in 1918. Dugdale was killed in action on 23 June 1918; sold together with copied citation, Commonwealth War Graves certificate and M.I.C.s.
