A Sea Gallantry Medal awarded to Seaman B. Coe, Merchant Navy

Sea Gallantry Medal, V.R., 58mm diam., for Gallantry (Bertram Coe. Wreck of the "Lilian" on the 16th December 1901.), in its fitted case of issue, very fine

Bertram Coe served on board the steamship Planet Neptune which launched a rescue boat and in spite of heavy sea and much difficulty and risk, succeeded in taking off the crew of the brigantine Lilian of Liverpool which was abandoned in the North Sea. A total of seven Silver Medals for Gallantry were awarded, in addition rewards were given by the Newfoundland Government. The Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners Royal Benevolent Society awarded Johan A. Philipsen who was the Second Mate its Silver Medal and £5. He was additionally given a pair of binoculars by the Board of Trade.
