An extremely rare Naval M.S.M. group of five awarded to Colour-Sergeant J. McCree, Royal Marine Light Infantry

British War Medal 1914-20 (Ply.13150 Sgt. J. Mc. Cree. R.M.L.I.); Defence and War Medals 1939-45; Royal Navy Meritorious Service Medal, G.VI.R. (Ply.13150 C. Sgt. J. R.M.), the George V awards mounted as worn, the George VI awards in their named boxes of issue, minor contact wear to Great War awards, otherwise good very fine (5)

John Mccree was born at Muirkirk, Ayrshire, his records state in 1884 although he was later determined to have enlisted underage. Joining the Royal Marines on 19 September 1904 at the Depot in Deal, he was posted to the Portsmouth Division the next year on 14 September 1905.

He was to serve with a number of vessels over his career, being advanced Corporal in 1908 and stationed with the Diving Tender Sabrina on the outbreak of the Great War. Promoted Sergeant with her on 16 February 1916, Mccree was soon posted ashore to the Auxiliary Patrol Base H.M.S. Idaho. His British War Medal was posted to him aboard Revenge after the war and it was here that he was further advanced Colour-Sergeant on 8 October 1923.

Enrolling in the Royal Fleet Reserve in 1926, Mcree remained with them until 1928 when he was discharged and immediately joined the Royal Military Police reserve. Appearing on the 1939 Census in Plymouth as 'Police Sergeant H. M. Dockyard', it appears he was working in that capacity when he was mobilised with that force on 25 August 1939; sold together with copied census data and service records.
