Crimea 1854-56, 1 clasp, Sebastopol (Pte. G. Smith. 11th Husss.), contemporary engraved naming, edge nicks and bruising, otherwise nearly very fine

George Smith was born at St Pancras, London, and enlisted into the 11th Hussars in London on 27 May 1854, aged 21, a porter by trade. He joined the regiment in the Crimea on 25 May 1855, just in time to partake in the siege and fall of Sebastopol. He died at Kadikoi on 11 December 1855, and was buried in the 11th Hussar cemetery on the road between Kadikoi and Karani.

The Medal roll states, ‘Cancelled Medal sent to father at Saltford, near Bath, on 8th September 1858.’
