Pair: Veterinary Surgeon P. Anthony, 11th Hussars (Prince Albert's Own)

Crimea 1854-56, 1 clasp, Sebastopol (Paul Anthony. V.S. P.A.O. 11th Hussars), contemporary engraved naming; Turkish Crimea 1855, Sardinian issue (Paul Anthony. V.S. P.A.O. 11th Hussars), contemporary engraved naming, fitted with Crimea suspension, edge bruising and contact marks, very fine (2)

Paul Anthony was born at Bakewell, Derbyshire, on 8 December 1833. He qualified at the Royal Veterinary College, London, on 11 May 1853, and was appointed Probationary Veterinary Surgeon in the 11th Hussars on 19 April 1854. He served the Eastern campaign from 6 August 1855, including the siege and fall of Sebastopol.

Anthony was court-martialled at Dublin in May 1861 for ‘neglect of duty’ and was severely reprimanded. He was again court-martialled at Dublin in May 1862 for:

‘...conduct un-becoming to the character of an officer and a gentleman...By calling a brother officer a cur and a liar and striking him a blow in the face.’

It appears that Anthony was accused as having claimed ownership of certain horses which were being run in local races, for which he took great offence, even if the charge was true. It was no surprise was found guilty and, in consequence, sentenced to be ‘dismissed the service’. Anthony died of fungus haematosis at Bakewell on 16 June 1866, aged just 32, and was buried in Bakewell Cemetery.
