Auction: 23888 - The Michael E. Bonine Collection of Persian and World Banknotes
Lot: 56

(x) Imperial Bank, Kingdom of Persia, 1 Toman, Maidaninaftom, 1st October 1924, serial number A/Q 097765, Maidanaftom, originally known as Jahangiri, was renamed after the first oil well began production. The date of this note precedes the accounting records of the Maidaninaftom (Maidan-i-Naftum/Masjed Soleiman) branch, which opened in June 1923 but has its first issue records dated March 1925. This note is dated 1924. In 1924 the city's name was changed again, now to Masjid Soleiman, leaving a time frame of only a couple months for the Maidaninaftom stamp to be used on the notes. Other known examples from this branch display the Masjed Soleiman stamp.
As a result, this 2nd series 1 Toman Waterlow and Sons printed banknote holds what is likely to be one of the rarest stamps in the Imperial Bank of Persia run.
This is the only example of the Maidaninaftom stamp from this branch in this collection, and represents the first time that Spink has had the opportunity of offering such a note to collectors
