Great Britain: Alliance British and Foreign Life and Fire Assurance Company, £100 shares, 185[5], #6740, in the name of Sir Edward North Buxton Baronet, signed by Samuel Gurney, red and black. Samuel Gurney, 1816-1882, second son of the founder. Sir Edward was from a prominent East Anglian banking dynasty and was married to Catherine Gurney, daughter of Samuel Gurney. The Alliance was formed in 1824 by Nathan Rothschild and Moses Montefiore along with Francis Baring, Samuel Gurney and John Irving. The company acquired many other corporations before merging with the Sun Insurance (formed in 1720) to form Sun Alliance which in turn merged with the Royal Insurance to form Royal Sun Alliance.
