Great Britain: Alliance British and Foreign Life and Fire Assurance Company, an interesting printed transfer certificate, 183[1], between Francis Baring as seller and George Payne Ashby as buyer for 10 shares. Signed by both Francis Baring and George Ashby. Ashby was a wealthy draper of Hampstead, London. Francis Baring, son of Thomas Baring, 2nd Baronet and grandson of the founder of the London banking company, 1796-1866, third baronet from 1848, created Baron Northbrook from 1866. Mainly involved in politics, he was a Lord of the Treasury from 1830, and was Chancellor of the Exchequer 1839 to 1841. The Alliance was formed in 1824 by Nathan Rothschild and Moses Montefiore along with Francis Baring, Samuel Gurney and John Irving. The company acquired many other corporations before merging with the Sun Insurance (formed in 1720) to form Sun Alliance which in turn merged with the Royal Insurance to form Royal Sun Alliance. VF and scarce early piece.
