Note, the recipient’s Punjab medal is known to have been on the market in 2013.
Joseph Leigh was born at Preston, Lancaster before attesting for the East India Company Artillery at Lancaster on 25 March 1846. Posted to the 1st Troop, 2nd Brigade, Bengal Horse Artillery as a Gunner he was to see action in the Second Anglo-Sikh War; his discharge papers state the battles participated in as: ‘Sadollopore [likely Sadulpur], Chillianwallah and Goojerat’. After the war Leigh was advanced Bombardier (23 December 1850) and Corporal on 5 November 1853, remaining in India all the while.
Leigh was a Sergeant with the Bengal Horse Artillery during the Indian Mutiny but does not appear to have actively served during the conflict. Advanced Quartermaster Sergeant on 28 September 1858, Leigh’s final promotion was to Battery Quartermaster Sergeant on 5 July 1860. At this point the European units in the East India Company’s Army were transferred to the British Army and Leigh volunteered for the Royal Horse Artillery on 18 February 1861.
He continued to serve for several years, being discharged on 5 August 1867 having spent nearly 24 years in India; sold together with copied medal rolls, discharge papers and a listing for the recipient’s Punjab Medal.
