Richard Gray was born at Bethnal Green, London in 1837 and was a Wood Turner prior to enlistment. Gray enlisted on 5 November 1857. He saw service in Gibraltar for 4 years and 30 days, Ionian Islands for 1 year and 298 days and in the West Indies for 3 years and 21 days. He was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal on 14 November 1875 and was promoted to the rank of Quartermaster Sergeant on 8 November 1878 and was finally discharged shortly afterwards on the 26 November 1878.
