Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.VI.R., 1st issue (M. 39969 E. G. D. McCarthy, M.A.A., H.M.S. Collingwood), good very fine
Ernest George Dennis McCarthy was born in Southampton, Hampshire on 13 January 1905, the son of a ship's steward, and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in July 1920.
Having served in submarines in the interim, he was appointed a Regulating Petty Officer in April 1937 and was likewise employed aboard the cruiser H.M.S. Hawkins on the outbreak of hostilities. He came ashore to an appointment in Afrikander at the end of 1940 and was serving as a Master at Arms at the training establishment Collingwood at the time of being awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in December 1944.
He died at the Sue Ryder Home - Bordean House - in Langrish, Hampshire in November 1980.
