Edward Sydney Lowther was born at Moonee Ponds, Victoria on 19 October 1902 and enlisted at Paddington, New South Wales on 1 June 1940. Joining the 1st Australian Corps of Signals, he was attached to the 2nd/6th Battalion and joined the war in the Middle East on 3 May 1941. Attached to the postal unit, a month later Lowther joined the 17th Australian Infantry Battalion in that capacity. Promoted Corporal in 1941 he was further advanced Staff Sergeant on 15 January 1942. Travelling to Australia by way of Columbia he returned to the war in New Guinea on 10 March 1944. Lowther was discharged on 26 September 1945.
