Samuel Cottle attested at Kingston-on-Thames on 29 November 1899, having previously worked as a carman. Extending his service on 26 September 1906 and again on 14 May 1911 Cottle was serving as a Battery Sergeant Major by the outbreak of the Great War. Serving at home he was only entitled to the British War Medal for his work, later joining the Territorial Army Cottle was posted to the 2nd East Anglian Brigade; sold together with copied medal rolls and M.I.C.
