Eddie James entered the war with the Royal Flying Corps on 18 January 1916 as Air Mechanic Class II. Serving in Egypt he was admitted to British General Hospital 133 in Cairo in July 1917, being promoted Air Mechanic Class I on 1 November 1917. Transferring to the Royal Air Force on the creation of that unit James was regraded Clerk Class I on 1 April 1918. He joined the Royal Air Force Reserve on 28 November 1919.
