William John Parker was born at Hobland, Gorleston, Norfolk. He joined the 4th Battalion Coldstream Guards on 26 October 1914 , this was a Pioneer Battalion until it went to France on the 15 August 1915. On 26 June 1916 he was out with a working party and fell into a shell hole and wounded his knee, his service papers state he was on duty at the time and was no way to blame with the accident taking place between 2-3am. Consequently he was returned to the U.K. on 2 July 1916 to convalesce at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital spending 35 days there, before moving to the Coonoor Auxiliary Hospital for another 41 days. He returns to France on the 26 May 1917 before returning back to the U.K. on the 15 March 1918 this time with Myalgia where he is sent to Toxteth Park Military Hospital, Liverpool spending 9 days before transferring to the Auxiliary Military Hospital, Liverpool and was eventually discharged from hospital on 18 April 1918. and was transferred to Class "Z" on 10 May 1919.
