Three: Stoker Petty Officer A. Hartle, Royal Navy, who served on H.M.S. Phaeton at the Battle of Jutland

Alfred Hartle was born at Wolverhampton on 1 March 1880 and was a groom when he joined the Royal Navy on 2 October 1899. Initially discharged in 1911 he joined the Royal Fleet Reserve and was called up on 2 August 1914.
Phaeton joined the 1st Light Cruiser Squadron, remaining with that squadron until March 1918. On 4 May 1916, during the raid on Tondern, Phaeton (with Galatea), shot down the Zeppelin L-7. She was present at the Battle of Jutland, taking part in the first clash of the battle, with the German cruiser Elbing.
Hartle was discharged ashore on 8 March 1919 receiving a war gratuity; sold together with copied service papers.
