Arthur Benjamin Buck was born at Stepney, London on 23 December 1877. Enlisting with the Royal Marine Artillery on 17 August 1898 he was appointed Gunner on 15 December 1890. Joining the Royal Fleet Reserve in 1910 Buck was mobilised on 2 August 1914. Posted to the Battlecruiser New Zealand on 28 September 1914 he was to take part in the Battles of Heligoland Bight and Dogger Bank.
He was still with the warship in 1916 when she steamed out as part of Admiral Beatty's squadron for the Battle of Jutland. New Zealand fired 430 of her 12-inch shells during the Battle, being credited with 4 hits, 3 on Seydlitz. She also hit the battleship Schleswig-Holstein once and suffered a single heavy hit on 'X' turret.
Buck continued to serve until 1 August 1917 when he was invalided from service.
