Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Central India (Patr. Claherty, 88th Regt.), contact marks, very fine

Patrick Claherty was born at Rahoon, County Galway in 1836 and attested for the 88th Regiment of Foot at Limerick on 14 February 1854. He served with them in the Crimea, and was slightly wounded in the trenches before Sebastopol on 9 May 1855 by gun shot to the mouth (Medal & 3 clasps). He saw further service in India and was discharged on 30 March 1875, after 21 years and 32 days’ service, of which 13 years and 167 days were spent soldiering in India, his period of service having been interrupted by five days’ ‘absent without leave’ in July 1872. He died at St John, Nova Scotia in 1897.

His officially impressed Crimea Medal was sold at Noonans in December 2023.
