(x) Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Central India (Hospl Serjt John Fletcher, 88th Regt), contact marks very fine
John Fletcher was born at Nenagh, Tipperary in 1828 and attested at Galway on 11 December 1847 with the number 2248. Advanced Sergeant by 1854 he was posted for service in the Crimean War, notably missing the Battle of the Alma in which most of the regiment fought. Fletcher was in the ranks for the confused 'soldier's battle' of Inkermann in which they lost over 100 men.
Appointed to the rank of Hospital Sergeant on 12 December 1857 he joined the battalion in India in time to see campaigning during the Mutiny. Surviving this, Fletcher continued to serve in India for over 11 years and was promoted Quartermaster Sergeant on 24 October 1862. He was further awarded his L.S. & G.C. on 14 March 1867. Finally discharged on 7 October 1868, it was noted that while he was not injured in battle a life of soldiering had rendered Fletcher 'unequal to the action duties of a soldier'.
Further entitled to a Crimea Medal 1854-56, clasps Inkermann and Sebastopol, Army L.S. & G.C., and Turkish Crimea Medal.
