John Coulter was born at Carrickfergus, Antrim, Ireland, around 1825. They moved swiftly to disarm the Sepoys on the parade ground of the Meean Meer and at the same time several companies broke into, and seized, the fort. Stationed in India with the 81st Regiment at Lahore at the time of the Mutiny. The mutinous elements of the army in the Punjab were taken by surprise by the swift move and British rule held.
With the fall of Delhi the 81st Regiment was attached to the Sittana Field Force on the Northwest Frontier. They were heavily engaged at the Battle of Sittana by a mixed force of local tribes and rebel Sepoys. Coulter survived the action and was discharged to his pension after the campaign.
