(x) South Africa 1834-53 (J. Ovens. 27th Regt.), light contact marks and minor edge bruising, otherwise very fine

John Ovens was born at Rosany, Fermanagh, Ireland in 1806 and enlisted with the 27th Foot on 12 June 1924. He was to serve for nearly five years in the West Indies, the effects of which left him with lasting health problems. However Ovens remained with the unit and joined them on the Cape of Good Hope.

He served here for 12 years and 230 days during which time the Regiment saw heavy service against the local Xhosa tribes. Likely including the 6th and 7th wars as well as smaller local engagements, Ovens earned his South Africa Medal in this period, one of 180 awarded to other ranks for the Regiment.

He was discharged at Glasgow on 6 June 1948 having served for almost 24 years of service. The reason given was that he was no longer fit for military service due to health problems he had picked up in the West Indies; sold together with copied service and discharge papers.
