Frederick William Hill served with both the 1st and 6th battalions King's Own Scottish Borderers during the Great War; the former participated in the abortive Gallipoli Campaign before seeing further action on the Western Front; the latter served in France from May 1915 and took part in the battles of Loos, The Somme, and Arras amongst others.

Corporal Hill's first Theatre of War was Egypt (25 April 1915).
