The campaign group of six awarded to Warrant Officer Class II J. R. Stone, 68th Medium Regiment, Royal Artillery, who was taken a Prisoner of War at Tobruk

John Richard Stone enlisted in the 68th (4th West Lancashire) Medium Regiment, Royal Artillery (TA), which was formed as a duplicate of 59 Medium Regiment with two Batteries in 1939. Stone and his Regiment were sent to High Wycombe in preparation to go to France but after Dunkirk everything changed. In September 1940, the Regiment was sent to fight in Eritrea and eventually to Egypt. He fought in the Western Desert with his unit but was taken a Prisoner of War at the Fall of Tobruk, when the unit were overrun by the forces under Rommel.

Stone was initially held at Stalag 357, in Poland which was relocated to Oerbke, near Fallingbostel. Having been released, he transferred to the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.

Escaping has ceased to be a sport by Frank Unwin, who served in the 68th Medium Regiment was published in 2018.
