Four: Lance Bombardier A. Harvey, 88th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery, who was evacuated from Dunkirk but was taken a Prisoner of War at the Fall of Singapore; he endured being put to work on the notorious Burma-Thai railway

Albert Harvey was born at Blackpool on 15 July 1916, a pre-war Territorial he was serving with 88th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery when war was declared in 1939.

The unit fought in France and Belgium manning 25 pounder field guns, and after evacuation from Dunkirk, served in various locations in southern England, in preparation for the anticipated German invasion. They were re-equipped and shipped to the Far East, travelling on the troopship Empress of Canada via Freetown (West Africa), Cape Town and Colombo, Ceylon (Sri Lanka). They arrived in Singapore only nine days before the Japanese attacked.

In the Malayan campaign they fought the Japanese at Ipoh and Alor Star. In the company of the Australian 8th Division and the Indian 9th Brigade, they saw most of the major actions in Malaya until capitulation in Singapore on 15 February 1942.

Initially incarcerated at Changi, he was moved to Thailand in November 1942 to work on the infamous Burma-Thai railway; being interned at Toncman (Tonchan) until April 1943, Chowsia from April to May 1944, Tamawang (Tamarkan) and lastly Nakom (Nakom Paton) until he was repatriated on 2 September 1945; sold together with copied research and Lancashire Gunners at War - History of the 88th Field Regiment 1939-45 by Stephen Bull.
