Dennis Elton Mitchell was born on 27 August 1921 and worked as an Apprentice Mechanic with the South African Railway & Harbours administration. Appointed 'A' Class Artisan with the South African Corps of Signals on 1 September 1942, embarking for the Middle East on 30 June 1942. Upon his arrival Mitchell was detached for duty with No. 1 Company, 9th Army Signals, Royal Corps of Signals.

Posted to the 40th Railway Telegraph Company, South African Corps of Signals on 11 July 1943 and two months later to the 2nd Signals Base where he was appointed a Fitter. Mitchell also suffered several bouts of illness which saw him admitted to the 67th General Hospital in 1944. Appointed Corporal on 15 August 1944, a rank he held until 29 June 1945 when he was posted to the Demobilisation Corps; sold together with copied research.
